>Harvard’s endowment was $53.2 billion in 2024, according to a financial report from the university.

$2.2B freeze probably will not effect much for Harvard but for the other universities they probably have to bent down.

It's a shame this happen to Harvard who just announced of full scholarship for undergraduate students [1].

[1] Harvard will be free for students whose families make $100,000 or less:

Sure it will. $53.2B is the value of their endowment, not their yearly budget. They only take out a single-digit percentage of they every year. It wouldn't last very long otherwise.

It's crazy to me how the US are shooting themselves in the feet with Trump. In a scorched earth policy. You might agree or not with the way top universities are run, but withdrawing their funding will just result in killing your own world renowned education centers. So in the end you will just have uneducated morons, with the state of mind of Elon Musk, and we will reach the state of Idiocracy faster than anticipated!

That's been the plan since Nixon+Reagan.

      > since Nixon+Reagan

More like since the late 1950’s with economist James Buchanan’s public choice reaction to school desegregation, a theory that won him the Nobel Prize in economics but also informed generations of conservative politicians. The planned destruction of public schools and universities had at its core the same racism that ran through the state of Virginia’s refusal to comply with Brown vs Board of Education, a project that Buchanan and his political partners were involved in.

An uneducated populace is easier to manipulate and control. Trump and his cronies didn't really care about US dominance; they'll find ways to profit regardless. I'm sure they're profiting already from what they're doing.

It is not inconsistent with a scenario in which the administration were taking action at the direction or for the benefit of another power; or were intent on either harming the country, government, and people, or else substantially compromising them.

Yep, and that country is the one whose opponents you are jailing or expelling, obviously.
